Tarifa is about 7 miles from the Straits of Gibraltar
where the Med meets the Atlantic Ocean. It sits opposite the
coast of Morocco, from which the lights of Tarifa are visible
at night.
Tarifa is the most southern tip of
Europe, the last stopping off point before reaching Africa.Tarifa,
once a military fortress, then a fishing town, and today a tourist
centre. It retains its old city centre and has blended its hotels
and other accommodation facilities within the old city walls
as well as along the coastline. Visit the magnificent church
of San Mateo in the centre. Tarifa has miles of sandy beaches
and some of the best windsurfing conditions in Europe making
it a true surfers paradise. On the hills behind Tarifa are hundreds
of wind turbines, making it one of the largest wind farms in
Europe. There are regular ferries between Tarifa and the nearby
Moroccan city, Tangier.
