Nerja is about 35 miles along the coast from Malaga
and its airport, and about 90 miles west of Almeria.
Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village with 10 miles of beaches with
glorious sand and sparkling Mediterranean water. It now offers
all major water sports including water skiing, scuba diving and
sailing. The old town is unchanged with narrow, winding streets
and whitewashed houses, and Nerja has avoided the high-rise explosion
of much of the Costa del Sol. To the east there is the Sierra
Almijara mountain range which can be seen from Nerjas' Balcon
de Europa, the "Balcony of Europe", a magnificent promenade
along the edge of a towering cliff with panoramic views of the
Mediterranean. Nerja has plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose
from. Nerja cuisine includes several fish specialities. Visit
the 17th century Church of El Salvador. Nerja's best known attraction
is its caves, with paintings over 20,000 years old. One of the
caverns has been turned into a concert hall, with entertainment
during the summer.
