Jerez De La Frontera is about 20 miles from the port
of Cadiz, close to the Atlantic Ocean. Jerez de la Frontera
is best known for its sweet wines (due to the high sugar content
of he grapes) named after the town, which the British pronounced
"sherry". September is a special month in Jerez . It
is time for wine harvest and celebrating. Jerez is also famous
for fine horses, singers and flamenco dancers. Famous sherry
names include Sandeman, Harvey, Domecq, Gonzalez Byass. Many
bodegas offer guided tours of their cellars & sampling of
the wine. The town is beautifully laid out with wide streets
and squares, an 11th century Moorish fortress has been partially
restored, a church which was originally built by the Arabs as
a mosque and the Cathedral del Salvador. Jerez is the best place
to witness the art flamenco dancing. Frontera refers to it once
being a border between the Moorish and Christian regions of Spain.
Jerez is also home to the motorsport race circuit Circuito Permanente
de Jerez home, a destination for the Formula One teams for off-season
testing. Jerez De La Frontera has its own airport. |
