Denia is a coastal city
located to the north of the province of Alicante and is the capital
of La Marina Alta, around 25 miles north of Benidorm and 60 miles
south of Valencia. It can be easily reached just 5 miles off
the main A-7 highway on the beautiful Costa Blanca.
Denia is a fishing port and holiday
resort, founded as a Greek colony but taking its name from the
Roman goddess Diana. It is dominated by the hill-top castle,
once an Arab fortress. The castle is open to the public and easy
to get to by car or foot. Denia was once the centre of the region's
raisin growing industry, raisins are still grown here and remain
a local delicacy. The whole area around Denia is dominated by
orange and lemon groves. The main avenue in Denia is the Plaza
de la Constitucion, a place to relax and watch the world go by.
Denia has an impressive working fishing fleet, fresh fish are
unloaded daily and there is a regular fish and meat market. Denia
has 20km of beaches, small rocky coves, ideal for diving and
it enjoys a mild climate. There is a ferry service from Denia
to the Balearic Islands and a scenic train that runs along the
coast to Calpe and back.
