Chipiona is a coastal town located west of Jerez de
la Frontera, 6 miles to the south of San Lucar, in the west of
the Cadiz province and near the estuary of the river Guadalquivir.
It is located 30 miles from the capital Cadiz.
Chipiona
has origins that date back to Roman times. The town was a rural
and seafaring spa in the 19th century and is today one of the
most popular resorts in the province. The town has four long
beaches Regla, La Ballena, Tres Piedras and Cruz del Mar and
many seafood restaurants. The impressive lighthouse at Punta
del Perro is 69 metres high, (the highest in Spain and third
highest worldwide). There are four corrals Longuera, Trapillo,
Cabito and Nuevo - opposite the town of Chipiona. Locals use
traditional fishing techniques that make use of these low lying
stretches of irregular red sandstone which provides shelter for
fish during low tides. Local wine is produced here, visitors
should try the delicious muscatel de Chipiona.
