Astorga is located around 25 miles south-west of the city
of Leon. It is easily accessed with two main motorways both running
through the city - the A6 Madrid-Coruna and the A-12, part of
the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
Astorga is a small city located in
the province of Leon. It lies in the area of the Maragatos, a
small ethnic community with distinctive customs and architecture.
The river Tuerto flows through Astorga, which was once one of
the Roman strongholds in the region. There are ruins of a Roman
bath visible today. The magnificent Episcopal Palace of Astorga
was built by Gaudi and is one of the major attractions today
(photo), the city cathedral is another.
