Algeciras Andalucia

Algeciras is a port city in the south of Spain, near Gibraltar. It is slightly north of Tarifa, the southernmost town of Spain. Both cities are situated on the Strait of Gibraltar; Algeciras also faces the Mediterranean. The modern harbour of Algeciras handles much traffic to and from Africa. There is a regular ferry service to Tangiers Morocco and Ceuta. One of the main bus stops of Algeciras is close to the railway station. From Algeciras Gibraltar is only 30 minutes by bus. Algeciras is primarily a port and industrial centre. It is an industrial city that supports the large deep water container port and nearby oil refinery. In the port area there are many Moroccans in transit, particularly during July and August, resulting in a strong Arab influence here with many of the signs in Arabic as well as Spanish. Algeciras is a genuine place with a real port atmosphere. There are lots of reasonably priced restaurants to try - several with glorious views of the nearby Rock of Gibraltar.

For most people Algeciras is often a stopping off place for tourists en route to Tangier and Morocco. From Algeciras there are 1 and 2 day trips to Tangier with fast ferry services to Africa. From Algeciras you can catch the train to Ronda which is definitely one of the best journeys in Andalucia.
